LOCATION: Negotiable
SALARY RANGE: $105,000 to $150,000

We are currently seeking a Business Development Manager for Battelle’s growing line of products in marine scientific instruments. The position will require significant time interacting with Battelle’s technical staff in Ohio. The preference is that the individual in this position will be located in Columbus, Ohio, although alternative arrangements are negotiable.
As a Business Development Manager in the Industrial and International Market Sector (IIMS), the selected individual will be responsible for the product planning, business development, marketing, and sales for Battelle – both in the areas of contract research and in marine scientific instrument products and services.
• Develops and drives product development plans and business development strategies in the areas of marine scientific instrument research, products, and services, in collaboration with Battelle technical staff and associated strategy teams.
• Works closely with scientific and engineering staff to perform market research, develop market plans and identify commercial, industrial and government clients and opportunities.
• Responsible for growing a broad portfolio of client relationships in the field of marine scientific instruments products, technologies, and services. Individual will be responsible for growing business to $10M/yr within three to five years.
• Manages marketing and proposal budgets. Responsible for delivering against financial targets, including sales, gross margin and contribution margin.
• Maintain sales database for business opportunities.
• Develops expert understanding of client needs to sell Battelle capabilities
• Negotiates with clients on prices, terms, and conditions of proposals
• Negotiates internally to develop consensus on strategies, prices, terms and conditions
• Guides opportunities through Battelle internal processes to deliver appropriate and timely proposals to clients.
• Maintains and manages close relationship with clients to ensure business growth
• Works with technical staff to assess/develop market potential for internal R&D projects and to develop and manage intellectual property.
Position requires significant travel – as much as 50% of work week may be spent away from home office.
THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:
The successful candidate must possess the following qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Oceanography, Engineering, or equivalent experience in a related field.
• 5+ years of experience working with marine scientific instruments.
• 10+ years of experience in a Product Development and/or Business Development role, with established client contacts in the fields of scientific instruments and/or marine technologies.
• Experience developing and managing product roadmaps and product platforms.
• Recent knowledge of oceanographic instrumentation and platforms.
• Experience selling programs, products, and services to commercial and industrial clients.
• Experience selling to senior management.
• Experience managing relationships with clients and alliance partners.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with research organizations to recognize and build business
• Ability to close deals with clients and make the sale.
• Ability to travel up to 50% of time.
THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:
• Advanced degree in related scientific or engineering discipline.
• Advanced degree in business.
• Additional business development breadth in adjacent fields, such as marine ecology, aquaculture, or off-shore oil exploration
• Experience working with both government and non-government clients.
• Client contacts in oceanographic and related industries.
